Philips 42PFL5403

Philips 42PFL5403

My Comment

i just bought this Philips latest LCD at a dealer shop in Singapore for about $3k+ and it turned out to be top bargain. As usual, when sourcing for a LCD, brands like Sony and Samsung first came to my mind. However, when i saw quality of picture on local broadcast signal on Samsung A550 series LCDs, i was mildly disappointed.

Instead, the picture on the 42PFL5403 caught me by surprise. Turns out that this latest model to be launched by Philips have an improved contrast ratio of 30,000 as compared to their predecesor of about 8000(i guess?) The colours are very natural and very little noise was noticed. Details were aplenty and lines was very sharp. Pleasant surprise to find out that the sound quality was excellent thanks to their 30W audio power and built-in subwoofer.

After the LCD was delivered, its performance did not disappoint me. Video playback on a HDMI DVD player was crisp but colours was a little ambiguous. However, the detailed images played back more than made up for this flaw. Images played back through PC input(VGA) was average but maybe i should connect it through one of its 3 HDMI input.

Overall, a LCD that delights because of its ability to provide clear images on analouge broadcast signal, unlike other more established brands.

Wind Netbook U100

MSI Wind Netbook U100

My Comment

MSI has dropped a few more details regarding its Wind ultraportable, and in the process criticised rivals such as ASUS’ Eee. We now know the Wind will be available with 8.9 or 10-inch LCD screens with LED backlight, running at 1,024 x 600, feature an 80GB standard 2.5-inch (e.g. not SSD) hard-drive and weigh around 1kg (around 2.2lb). It’s been confirmed to run Windows XP.

As for the snub, MSI accused competitors of having “compromised the memory capacity”, presumably by choosing relatively low-storage flash memory. ASUS’ Eee, for instance, can be bought with as little as 2GB of storage, rising to a 20GB SSD in the larger Eee 900 version. They also suggest that an 8.9-inch display is the minimum for comfortable reading and writing; the entry-level Eee has a 7-inch display.

The Wind is believed to use a processor ranging from 1.0GHz to 1.6GHz and ship with 1GB RAM. MSI are claiming particularly long battery life, and that has previously been suggested as up to 7hrs. It will be available in Europe in June, priced somewhere between $470 and a whopping $1,110, although a release schedule for the US is as-yet unknown.
